The Tyre is an unsung hero
of modern motoring. A product so durable it can withstand
thousands of miles of high speed motoring with a minimum
of maintenance. A product so sensitive it can transmit
the tiniest characteristics from the road surface to
the drivers' fingertips.
But despite these qualities tyres are for the most part
largely ignored by motorists. The only attention that
the majority receive are when they fail an MOT or require
replacement.
This situation is laden with potential danger. Tyres
are absolutely safety critical components, which require
simple but regular care and attention. Promoting the
importance of tyre safety is therefore an essential
role of PTA.
These are some of the techniques employed to raise the
profile of the issue to both trade and consumer audiences:
* close co-operation with Police forces throughout the
UK in organising roadside tyre safety checks and campaigns;
* extensive public relations and media campaigns highlighting
safety issues and offering expert advice;
* national surveys and research projects to quantify
the facts of tyre abuse;
* conferences and seminars to discuss the issues and
opportunities;
* joint activities with leading agencies and organisations
such as Trading Standards, the Environment Agency and
the RAC to address specific areas of concern, such as
part worn tyres, inflation pressures and scrap tyres
in the environment.
The NTDA regards itself as the guardian of tyre standards,
with members supplying, fitting and disposing of many
millions of tyres annually. Promoting the qualities
and benefits of these excellent products will continue
to be among the highest of priorities. Tyrecheck 2000
has now been launched. Find out more information about
